We are delighted to announce that our Gardening Course with East Surrey College restarted on Monday 13th May! This 6-week taster course is designed for adults with varying abilities and special educational needs.

Our senior management team got our Polytunnel and gardening facilities at one of our Weavers supported living location in Merstham, near Redhill. Our team tidied up, weeded and got the everything ready for the new course.

Sadly the project was put on hold during the pandemic, and we also lost our fantastic tutor Sue Eldridge who has now retired after many years of dedicated tutoring, sharing her passion for horticulture to so many.

With new staff ready to make the Gardening courses fun and engaging, this is an exciting new development for Strada Care!

Gardening and horticultural courses for adults with learning difficulties and additional needs are a great way to show how outdoor and nature activities can be used within a community setting to enhance their quality of life through boosting mental and physical health:

  • Learning new skills either alone or getting to work as a team, making new friends along the way
  • Destressing in the fresh air of the outdoors, a great distraction from other aspects of life you may find are becoming overwhelming
  • Absorbing the sensory experience of the garden with smells, visuals, touch, sounds and even taste! One session involved making a salad with ingredients foraged

Beyond our great partnership with East Surrey College, exciting plans are in the making to make this site an amazing community resource in Merstham, Redhill.
